Gandhi was able to influence the lawyers through his conviction. The ‘lawyers played a vital role in the champaran movement. When Gandhi arrived at Champaran, the lawyers called on to brief him. But, When they met Gandhi, he chided them for collecting big fee from the poor share croppers.According to Gandhi, they made the law-courts useless for the fear-stricken peasants.
When he went to Motihari, several lawyers accompanied him, And when Gandhi was going to tried in the court, Several prominent lawyers, including Rajendra prasad come from Bihar to support him. Gandhi ask them what would they do if he was sentenced to prison . To this, a senior lawyer replied that if he went to jaill, they would go back to their respective homes. This answer disappointed Gandhi. He asked them what would happen to the sharecroppers,The lawyers felt ashamed at this question .They thought returning back to their homes leaving the peasants helpless would be a ‘shameful’ act. After this realisation only they told him that they would ready to follow him everywhere, even into the jail.They were all ready to fight the battle for the peasants. Hearing this, Gandhi become more than satisfied that he declared that the battle of champaran won.
