If ABCD is a rectangle , find the values of x and y

ABCD is a rectangle
(a) X=10,y=2
(b) X=12,y=8
(c) X=2,y=10
(d) X=20,y=0

(a) X=10,y=2

Explanation:

ABCD is a rectangle

So, AB = DC and DA = BC (opposite sides of rectangle)

x + y = 12 .....(1)

x - y = 8 .....(2)

Now, (1) + (2)

(x + y) + (x - y) = 12 + 8

2x = 20

x = `20/2`

x = 10

By putting x = 10 in (1)

x + y = 12

10 + y = 12

y = 12 - 10

y = 2

∴ x = 10 and y = 2
